Cleaning Old Linoleum Flooring

When I moved into an older home a year ago, I noticed the old kitchen and entry way floors were dirty. What I didn't know is that dirt was ground into the flooring and no amount of mopping would clean it. I've tried everything and been frustrated and almost given up. Until . . .

I was shampooing my carpets a few weeks ago. I thought maybe the scrubbers on my carpet machine would clean the kitchen floor. It cleaned well enough but I thought it could be better so I grabbed the old standby, baking soda. I sprinkled the soda on the floor and then cleaned it with my Bissell. OMG, finally clean floors! YAY!

I've also found to maintain the cleanliness of the linoleum floors, I use a drop of Dawn dish soap and a half a cup of baking soda in hot mop water and it's clean and beautiful.

Please note that baking soda is alkaline, and thus is not recommended for linoleum. In time it will harden and dry the floors which may cause them to crumble.

I will try that! I have old floors too. White, no less. I have to use a steam cleaner on my hands and knees for hours to get it close to white again. I will try your Dawn and baking soda idea.

I just bought a Swiffer WetJet hoping that would work on my old lino, but no such luck. My old floors is white (supposed to be) and to add insult to injury, has little decorative grooves and holes that capture grime and won't let go. I've tried everything.

I will try your idea now. But I wonder if I could put the Dawn, baking soda in with the WetJet solution and use the Swiffer mop. I don't have a rug shampooer. I would probably have to rinse, right?, to remove the soap and soda?

Until now I have been using Lysol bathtub cleaner (the kind that foams) & scrubbing-but this sounds great! Thanks for sharing.

Stop buying those overpriced floor cleaners. My floors have never been cleaner, using baking soda. Thank you for this tip.

Wish I had found it almost 100 dollars ago. If you haven't done so yet, try it ... it WORKS!

I ran a side by side test on my linoleim floor... Vinegar vs baking soda vs spin n span vs Lysol vs Lysol bath cleaner/kitchen spray vs srubbing bubbles. A clear winner arose.... The Lysol n scrubbing bubbles bath cleaners. I guess the bubbles raise the dirt out of the nooks to be washed away.
