Encouraging Kids to Eat Fruits and Vegetables

Getting Kids to Eat Veggies

If you have children who turn up their noses at cooked veggies, puree some of the cooked veggies and then add them to your soup, stew, etc. I also chop coarsely cooked peas, carrots, and potatoes and add them to my meat loaf mix. It makes the meat loaf extremely moist and the kids are none the wiser.

This has worked for my daughter for many years and I now I do it for the grandchildren as well.

Blended Vegetables

Will your kids eat stew but pick out the vegetables they don't like? To sneak more healthy vegetables into your picky eaters try blending the vegetables to a pulp with a cup or two of water and then pour this into your soup or stew stock.

Of course, you have to season this stock well so they won't taste the vegetables. Add coloring or Kitchen Bouquet Browning and Seasoning Sauce if necessary to make it look like a brown stock.

Dipping Sauce

Encourage your children to eat more fruits and veggies by giving them something healthy to dip them into. A yogurt based salad dressing is good for dipping veggies, and fruit yogurt is great for dipping fruit.

Vanilla Yogurt Dipping Sauce

I found a great healthy snack that my kids love and it's simple. Slice up an apple and serve with vanilla yogurt to dip them in. My kids eat a lot more apples and yogurt now. It's great with grapes too!

Roasting Vegetables

Try roasting your veggies especially brocolli, cauliflower, zuchinni and carrots in the oven. If you toss the veggies in a little bit of olive oil with italian seasoning or other spices and put in oven until tender. The veggies lose their sulfur taste and become sweet - at least to me. Also zuchinni coated with olive oil and parmesan cheese and cooking in oven.

Veggies in the Spaghetti Sauce

One way to make spaghetti sauce go even further is to add frozen mixed veggies. It's one way to get picky children to eat their veggies without them even realising vegetables have been consumed.

The way my mom got us 4 kids to eat our veggies, is to melt velveeta on top, broccoli and cauliflower, especially, and i use this method for my daughter. She love it, and her preschool serves broccoli and cauliflower with a cheese dip so the kids can dip the veggies.

The really like this, as we know, kids like to dip things, lol

You can also add carrots the potatoes you are cooking for mashed potatoes and just fix as usual. Kids seem to like having the orange mashed potatoes and dont realize the reason is the cooked in carrots. Mine liked that as well as my grandchildren.

My smart little daughter-in-law adds pureed green beans to her chocolate cake mixes and you would never know.

Somebody wrote a book about sneaking veggies into everything. Sorry I don't have the name or author.

This doesn't address kids knowingly developing healthy eating habits, but would give some foods more nutritional value.

Let them eat raw! Okay, so it's not going to work with all children, and not with all vegetables, but it can be tried. One of my 3 sons loathed cooked vegies, but to my surprise I found he would grab at any raw vegetables I was preparing, peas,, beans.

carrots, and tomatoes especially, he just loved uncooked tomatoes. So I let him eat as much as he wanted of those.
Ironically, now that the boy is all grown up he's a vegetarian!

I like to have the fruit and veggies readily available. I have a large pretty wire bowl that I keep on my island and the grandkids can just help themselves any time they want. And the veggies need to be cut and stored in baggies in the fridge so they can be easily accessed. But then again, my kids all like fruits and veggies so don't have to force them which is great. Yesterday I brought groceries home and before I could get everything put away, my grandson (5years old) had already put the oranges, apples and bananas in the bowl. I will of course wash the apples but didn't want to discourage him.

I always dished up one teaspoon of every "hated" vegetable for my children. It was a standing rule that they had to eat that. Today, as adults, they eat whatever they find on their plates.

They were also free to eat fruit as in between snacks and as part of supper.
