Salt Build-Up in Water Softener?

I have a water softener which has a 10 in. layer of solidified salt at the bottom of the softener. Any suggestions for how I can break up such a thick layer? Thank you.

Try using straight white vinegar. When salt solidifies, it's very alkaline. Vinegar should dissolve it. Pour the vinegar on it & let it sit for a while. Rinse out & repeat till the salt is gone.
