I had never heard of it either so I googled it. Here is an explanation.

It is just a drink made with beets. I personally don't like it but many people do. My parents used to make it. I am from Germans from Russia ancestry. They used to make many things to get by cheaply since there was not a lot of money. They used everything and didn't waste.
