With the very cold weather everywhere in the country recently, we need to be covering our heads and ears to keep warm. It takes too long to knit a cap, so I designed this the be quick and easy, and crochet goes more quickly, at least for me.
This pattern can easily be custom made since it is made using measurements in inches rather than Gauge and numbers of stitches and rows.. Takes about half a skein of 4 ply yarn and can even be made multicolor from leftover yarns
For a little reference, I have made a cap that fits my husband, and I have noted the measurements that were used to make the cap shown above.
Approximate Time: I am bad about keeping track of time, but believe that I finished this in about 3 hours, and that was recording directions as I worked.
Hatband: Ch 12.
Row 1: Starting in 3rd chain from the hook, make 1 DC in each chain across. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2: DC in each DC across, working in back loop only. 10 DC.
Row 3: Repeat row 3 until piece measures the number of inches for the headband. End on an even row (My hat took 34 rows to reach 23 inches.)
Fold band and match up the first row with the last row; then SL ST in each stitch across, going through both ends. Ch 1. Then turn band and, working around the edge of the band, make 2 sc in the side of each DC around. (My hat took 68 SC to complete) Join with SL ST to first SC, This completes the first round. Ch 3. (Do not turn.)
Next Round: 1 DC in each SC around. SL ST to join. Ch 3. (Do not turn.) Repeat this round until the hat is long enough to reach the crown of the head, or longer if you desire a roomier hat. (My hat has 14 rows, and fits tightly to the head.) Work 1 row of sc in each DC around and fasten off.
Cut a piece of yarn about 14 inches, and, using a yarn needle, weave through the SC row; then draw it up tight, and tie it off with a double knot. Pull the strings to the inside of the hat and trim them to 1/4 inch. Make a pom-pom and attach to the top of the hat.
