We buy kitty litter that comes in buckets with handles. After using the kitty litter, wash out the resealable bucket and store pet food in bucket. Make sure the bucket is dry before putting the pet food in. Store in a cool place.

I am so sorry, Kate, but this is not at all a good idea. Not only do chemicals in the non-food items leach into the plastic container but also the chemicals used to make non-food plastic containers are different than the safe food grade chemicals used for food containers. All of the non safe chemicals then leach into both pet or people food. :-(
It's wonderful to reuse non food plastic containers when possible but please only use them for non food items. It's not even safe to reuse food grade plastics for food or beverages unless they are recycle #2, #4 or #5.
You can use these "buckets" for soaking clothing that needs extra care, and for salt (those who deal with snow and ice). I use one for holding salt either in the house or the garage and if needing extra weight in the car for traction. Also if you get stuck you have salt to help out.
