Finding Temporary Financial Assistance and Housing?

I am married with 2 boys. My husband just fell off a 30 foot roof working and broke his right foot and left knee. He will be in a wheelchair till January sometime.

We also recently lost our home and are staying on family couches. We are still waiting for his workman's comp to come in. I am trying to find an apartment even if it's 1 bed room for now.

I am very much scared that we will not be able to provide a good Christmas for our boys 9 and 4. I am not worried about anything else except to get my boys in their own home again and maybe given them a little happiness.

I know my husband will be back to work in a few short months, but for us it seems like forever. I really feel like a pest living in family living room and borrowing a brother's car just so we can get back and forth to doctors and what not.

I know there are people a lot worst off than we are, but is there any info someone can give me to help get me on the right track again please? Thank you and bless.

There are several places that might be able to help you with housing, etc. For housing, start with your county welfare department and the department of social services, they should be able to give you some leads. Most places have housing assistance but there is usually a really long waiting list. Where I live the list is roughly 2-3 years long. There are also HUD financed apartments, but there again there is a waiting list, and they are income based---the rent runs 30% of your income, as does the housing assistance mentioned about. As far as Christmas help goes, when it is time to apply for that help it will be mentioned on the news.

Call, better yet visit face to face, the Salvation Army and Catholic Charities offices in your area. Even if they can't give much help or immediate help they will know all of the places in your area who can help.

Are you able to work? Maybe you could find a job during the times that your children are in school and your husband can watch them when they get home? There are many websites that have employment opportunities listed. For Christmas for you children, they are young enough that you could buy presents at the dollar stores or used? Also, your local Department of Human Services office could direct you to the holiday gift program and coats program if they need coats. Good luck with your job search!

I lost everything which I had saved through a fire. I lost my son because of meningitis and was depressed for many years. I ran a cafe restaurant for the last three years. Everything was going well, but the businesses burned in January and everything was destroyed. I was left with nothing from the business. I had no contents insurance, because everything I bought was brand-new and had its own warranty for any breakdown, but was not covered for fire. I am left now with a lot of debts, loans, and a mortgage.

I am wondering if anyone knows any place I can get assistance in a time like this. Maybe even some help financially to keep me going for a while. There is no way I can afford a mortgage or even paying for my moving costs. I have my child to look after. I feel awful because I was a hard worker to keep my lifestyle in standard condition. I am a big loser. So any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you so much.

The Red Cross helps people after a fire.

Heidi, you sound like a very strong person who has endured serious tragedy. It is hard to have to put one's life together again and then again. You need to find a job as soon as possible to take care of you and your childs' day to day needs. It will also keep you busy so depression doesn't enter the picture and overwhelm you.

I would consult someone who understands bankruptcy and get some good advice. We aren't meant to carry an impossible burden, and the law allows for that. But you need to reach out and get started. Many people are going through very difficult times right now. Find a friend who will listen to you and support you. Best of luck to you, and I am so sorry for your loss.
