Gift certificates are very popular at this time of year but don't just give one in a boring envelope. If it's for a magazine subscription, cut out pages from that publication and size down with a scanner to make a little booklet. Then wrap in a pretty box.

I give alot of gift certificates, too. If it is a restaurant, I try to print a menu from the Internet.
I may even suggest a theme, like date night and add a few small items like Dentenye Ice and suggest they have a cool time. etc.
When I give a gift cert to a restaurant of fast food I ask for a package like a happy meal box or starbucks cup to tuck the card into. Its cute, people who see these under the tree know they are getting a g c from me and it is easier to keep track of during the unwrapping frenzy where it could more easily get thrown out.
