Bar of Soap Clogging the Toilet?

A bar of soap is clogging our guest toilet causing overflow upon flushing. Snaking removed a small part of the bar but enough remains lodged to cause the problem to continue. Any tips on disolving the soap bar quickly while keeping the toilet intact?

Hello all,

First off, what a great little forum I have found here!

Two days ago I intentionally threw a mushy bar of soap (it belonged to my roommate who had just been leaving it dissolve in the shower for weeks until I just couldn't take it anymore) that was about two thirds the size of a regular bar of soap. Before throwing I thought that I was about to do something stupid but figured that the bar of soap, being so mushy and not that big would just flush down easily. Big mistake.

So for two days I've been flushing like crazy hoping to dissolve the soap. I also threw bleach in the toilet and even Drano (apparently you're not supposed to do that as per the instructions on the can) and nothing would work. My toilet was flushing so slowly that there was no way it could handle anything other than urine. I wanted to throw a bucket of very hot water down the toilet but then I read that I could melt my toilet's wax ring (whatever that is) or crack the toilet so I decided not to. I bought an auger, the kind plumbers use, and snaked the toilet two or three times. I did reach the soap as I could see lots of soap material stuck at the end of the auger but still my toilet was flushing way too slow to handle number twos.

So today I read this thread and decided to pour three big buckets of WARM water and plunge the toilet for about 15 seconds in between each pour. I poured the water as quickly as I could. My toilet is now flushing great. I'll still monitor it for the next few days but all seems good.

Hey, I'm Rick. Just pour a five-gallon bucket of water down the toilet. (With that much water, the bar of soap has no choice but to go on through).

So, about two weeks and some days ago, I was in the bathroom finishing my cleansing of myself and I had put a bar of soap into a wash pale and when I poured the water out into the toilet I had done forgot to take that bar of soap out of the wash pale and it had went down into the toilet; and well then I just went and decided to go fishing for it with my hand, but it just slipped down further and further until I could not get to it anymore; so I tried a little to plunge the toilet for a little bit and it did not work; so I found out that Hot Water from the faucet is good to help loosen it up, and Ammonia is best to help it to dissolve and flow out freely. And Ammonia is good for a lot of other things too, including getting rid of odors and other bacteria, because it can dissolve and/or break it up for it all to flow away.__ So I went on and did use hot water from the faucet with some Ammonia too, but for the first couple of days to about two weeks I did use a wash pale like you get from the hospital, instead of a bucket so that I can more easily see how the water is going down the toilet; and I would only do all of this when I would have to go to the bathroom; and I would only stand there for a few minutes manually plunging it with a plunger and each time I would use some Ammonia with the hot faucet water; and every day that went by the water kept getting easier and easier to go down; so after about two weeks of doing this, I then went on ahead and poured a bucket of hot faucet water down the drain to flush the toilet and I did have to plunge it to go all the way down and it was hard and easy plunging all at the same time going down_!!!

And because it felt a little hard that first time I went on ahead and poured more Ammonia into the toilet and poured another bucket of hot faucet water down the toilet and it all went down on its own and I did hear a little bit of a sounding flush with a swirl when it did it; so I poured a little more Ammonia into the toilet that day and flushed it again with another bucket of hot faucet water and I let it sit for a while that day; and now it has been a few days with the water back on for the toilet and everyone has been using the toilet with no problems and the toilet is now flushing better than it has ever flushed since we been in this house and I hear that sound we all are ought to be hearing when water goes down a drain and the house really smells good even in the basement, because I even now use Ammonia in those drains too; NOT BLEACH_!!!

My husband is a plumber, he said to try liquid dran0 since that breaks up soap scum. By the way, this is the only time he has said to use that stuff for anything lol.

He hates that stuff but since it is only for soap - it should be fine. Good luck.

Try boiling water....send down bucket after bucket it should help it melt/dissovle quickly..... you could also try an enzyme type drain cleaner from your local plumber...

I just had this problem today. Some folks commented on the risk of using boiling water and breaking the porcelain. My hot water gets pretty hot. I turned off the water to the toilet and poured in warm water first to get the bowl up in temperature, and then poured several pots of very hot water (hot enough to burn hands, but not boiling).

After about 6 pots directly from the sink, the soap blockage (a brand new bar per my wife) was gone.

Put a water softener or 20 mule team borax in the bowl and pour lots of Hot water down the drain. It wont take long. I would add the water softener to the Hot water. Use buckets to pour down the bowl drain.

Using hot water May MELT YOUR WAX RING that seats the toilet to the floor! I know this from dumping a pot of hot water down the toilet. Be forewarned, you do NOT want that melted!

I have the same problem! My 3 year old put a whole bar of soap in and flushed it! Now I can't unclog it!

I tried a snake, but it's broke or something. And also a plunger. So, hot water will work?

We have tried Drano, hot water, &, a snake. None have worked. My suggestion is go to Lowes & buy a new toilet. We have been waiting almost 2 weeks and the soap still has not melted. Thanks.

I had this happen to me and I went out to buy Liquid Drano but saw Roebic Soap Digester which has enzymes that breaks down soap and is generally used for washing machines and diswashers. Anyway I turned the water off poured it in the toilet and plunged a few times to get it worked down and left it for 12 hours and bam no more soap..and it only cost around 8 bucks.

A brand new bar of soap jumped out of my 12 year old sons hands and landed in the toilet. Of coarse, he flushed it. It took a while (the next morning "Christmas" when going to shower) to figure out why it was clogged. I tried everything! Read this the morning after Christmas and tried the hot water with water softener salt almost to a boil. It took only 4 gallons and the soap was gone. Cost was 0 as I took the salt from the water softener.

OMG! This works! My son dropped a bar of soap in the toilet last night. I have been plunging all day I have blisters on my hands. Finally took a break and googled "bar of soap in toilet" thinking how silly that sounded. Had no idea how many people this has happened to! Thanks for the help, it worked like a charm and not to mention my toilet bowl is so clean now ha ha!

My husband, also a plumber, said that flushing hot water down a toilet will not melt that ring. I done it many times over the years for various reasons and I've never had a problem.

This thread helped me, so i wanted to chime in. I had the same problem with a bar of soap in the toilet. I left town for a few days and assumed it would naturally dissolve by the time I got back home, but no such luck. I found this thread and then searched for the aforementioned Roebic Soap Digester. I couldn't find that exact product at Ace Hardware but i did find Roebic Main Line Cleaner (for about the same price $9), which I decided to try instead. I poured about 1 1/2 cups into the clogged toilet and waited about two hours. I then dumped a pot of boiling water into the standing water in the toilet and it began to drain instantly, but slowly. I followed up with 3 or 4 more pots of boiling water and voila! Mission accomplished!

Did you turn off the water at any time before flushing? Did you follow the directions and flush the cleaner or did you let it soak in the existing water? Please advise. Thank you

Thanks for the terrific advice regarding the Roebic product! It worked on my commode within a few hours.

Pour a can of Coke down the toilet.Coke can lift paint varnish from wood so should be able to take care of soap.
