I work for a not-for-profit organization and we are currently working on designing a float for the community day celebration in our town. The theme is "Movie Memories" and we are having a bit of trouble coming up with a float idea that will look fantastic but won't cost a lot. Any ideas?

My best idea is to cover the float platform with mylar -or some other silvery metallic material and them put curving black paint/cardboard over it to look like curiving film....Maybe add some gold Stars...Then on the float itself have people dressed like famous old movie stars... And have a large Oscar-like cutout and maybe a Hollywood sign....Ot old movie cameras set up on old tripods & make it look like a working set with directors chairs, etc...
I love the idea of a movie themed float. So cool. Tapes are not pricy these days (garage sales, flea markets) use the tapes covers front a back to glue around or hand around the float. You can punch holes in the tops and string them like garland. There are old records you could do from movies. Book covers from old movies. T-shirts, bed sheets. You can also use the pictures from dvd movies at home. Most of the picture covers come right out.
Take VHS and DVD covers to Kinkos and have them enlarged or ask at your movie theatre for posters...also, post on Freecycle...you have no idea the things you can find on there.
you can buy mylar movie projector and slapboards from balloon suppliers such as balloon room.com make an oscar stnd up out of styrofoam etc.
What you could do is some of you dress up as actors from like the 50's when TV was black and white, since most of the time black and white objects cost the least at stores. Then just make everything black and white! Incorporates movies from the past and is inexpensive too! GOOD LUCK!
