Now that I have chickens, I am going to plant tons of marigolds all in the garden and around the house. Marigolds are one flower that make snakes wander elsewhere. This flower is going to be the star of my garden. Even though I said on a post last year on Thrifyfun how much I hated marigolds, things change. They are going to be plentiful this year in my garden and around the hen house. Chickens can look attractive to snakes. I see that the flowers take four months to begin getting enough of their stuff into the soil to deter pests.

I love marigolds. I think the colors are so bright & pretty. I didn't know they kept snakes away, but I plant a lot of them as they are deer resistant. I live where the deer are plentiful (WV) so marigolds work well for me. Thank for the info about the snakes!
Around where I live, all the farmers get chickens and let them run around the yards to keep snakes at bay. The chickens wil peck at the snakes and chase them away; there are a few snakes that are exceptions, but most will not go where chickens are. I've gardened over 50 years and have never heard of marigolds keeping snakes away, only being used for insect control.
When I was living on the farm while growing up we had chickens everywhere and there were still chicken snakes (black snakes) in the nests swallowing eggs.
