If the item has a warranty period, receipts should be kept at least until the warrenty expires. Receipts for items of clothing should be held until they have been worn and laundered/drycleaned at least once. Forget the loaf of bread! Use your discretion for all receipts.
With all my appliances, large and small, Big Ticket items, such as furniture, tools etc., I staple the receipts in the manuals and keep until I dispose of the appliance. If I sell or give it away, I also give them the manual.
