Seven Mood Lifting Activities

Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 107 Posts
  1. Keep an uplifting photo of your child, grandchild, pet, or favorite vacation spot on your desk, near your work area, or in your purse or wallet. When you begin feeling overwhelmed, grumpy, or mentally tired take a few moments to focus on the picture and you will begin to feel better.

  3. Pop a piece of peppermint in your mouth when you start to feel the familiar afternoon slump. It's refreshing flavor will quickly perk you up.
  4. If you're in a place where it's possible to do so, sing. Singing songs that lift your spirit is a great way to improve your mood on a down day.
  5. Taking a walk can put you in a better mood.
  6. Petting a cat, dog, or some other type of furry pet can improve your mood.
  7. Keep an inspirational quote in a visible location so that you can read it for encouragement whenever you need to.
  8. Sometimes just a brief distraction from whatever is causing your mood to take a downward turn is all you need to turn a bad mood into a good mood. Doodle some silly characters on paper. Gaze out the window and get lost in a daydream like you did as a child. Do something simple that will give your mood time to readjust.

Whenever you can, have natural light in your home. If you can't, get a natural light visor. They are only about 30.00 at Home Depot and Lowes, in the lighting section.

Get plenty of Vitamin D, and yes, go outside even if it's cold. You will feel invigerated when you return. Having spent winters in AK when it's dark 95% of the time, I have learned to not let the SAD take over.

Hope this helps.

Sometimes all we need is a reminder of something we love to lift our spirit and change our mood. No matter what the circumstances there are so much to be grateful for. It is really a decision to be happy. Happiness comes from within.

Get a notepad and write down everything that you are grateful for. When you feel down, pick it up and read through all of those wonderful things. I try and think of three different things every morning that I am grateful for.

I write them down so I can re-read them when I am sad or low... and it really does help.
