Repairing Broken Window Sash Cords?

How do I repair a broken sash window? The cables have broken.

Prepare for a major job, if your counterbalance sash weights are inside the window frame. Generally both sides of window casing must be removed. That may expose the counterweights, and maybe not. There were various ways windows were built back then, as there are now.

I did a couple of those jobs, but only with a time and material cost bid. Most carpenters won't even touch them.
