When my daughter was little, the Dollar Tree didn't exist. I found things at thrift shops and made things. I always made sure it wasn't "age specific". In other words, the streamers, banners, etc. were generic. Instead of "Happy Birthday 2 Year Old" or "Happy Birthday Sabrina" it was simply "Happy Birthday".
I made cupcakes instead of cake so I could make a variety of flavors and frostings. When the guests came over, they brought pot luck things for the adults to eat. All I had to do was provide the coffee and punch.
The main thing is that people remember and celebrate with you. Not the bill at the end of the day.

Excellent advice! My daughter recently forked over an exorbitant amount for a party for my grandson and was miserable the whole time because the venue wasn't very good about fulfilling the terms of the deal. (I think it was a Chuck E Cheese.) I'll remind her about this idea for next time.
