I found if you gentle rub the chain between your fingers it helps loosen the chain so you can detangle it.

I use a real dental pick (that dentists use to scrape tartar from your teeth). Since the tip is curved, this really helps to keep it from slipping. If you can't get your dentist to give you a professional pick, you can get the small ones with a plastic ends.
