Avoid Gossip in a Small Town

Here's some advise from someone who has lived in small towns all of my life until now (Salem is the capital of beautiful Oregon). In small towns, everyone is related (I exaggerate). Don't ever enter into gossip because you will be talking about someones cousin, brother in law, step mom, step sister or step brother. You get the picture. Zip the lip and listen carefully.

Learned that lesson the hard way, in spades, when I moved from a large metropolitan area to a small town. Everybody is related.

I learned the hard way, not only never to gossip, but to be very careful in whom I confided. A fellow minister (yes, minister!) in whom I'd confided something intensely personal thoughtlessly broadcast it through the church. She never knew how much that wounded me. That's partly why I'm no longer part of that congregation.

My lesson in "be careful what you say and to whom" came when I was gushing over the beautiful, talented young lady in rehearsals for my kids' spring HS musical. I had no idea the petite lady I was talking to was the gal's mother. Good thing I wasn't being catty!
