How Do I Make Potpourri from Dried Flowers?

I'm trying to make potpourri out of my son's flowers from his funeral. They turned brown, but still smell like the lavender that I used. Are they still good if they are brown? Someone told me that I had to put them in a glass bowl in the sun. Did I do it right?
