Cream together the sugar, shortening and vanilla. Add the egg, sifted dry ingredients and the milk. Pour half of the batter into a greased 8x8 inch square pan. Cover with half of topping. Add remaining batter, then top with remaining topping. Can be baked now or refrigerated overnight. Bake at 350 degrees F for 25 minutes. Ice while warm with the following icing: powdered sugar, milk and vanilla.
(Self rising flour: 2 cups flour, 1 Tbsp. baking powder, 1 tsp. salt.)
