Go to your local carpet dealer. Often, they have the very hard and free tubes that can be cut with a jigsaw and decorated with almost anything.

Carpet tubes or PVC pipe. If you need to have the capital and base of the column, I suggest using varying sizes of boxes stacked together and then fastened to the tube. You can also use Styrofoam or cushion foam if you don't need to put anything on top of the columns.
