I think you should call your sanitation department, and ask them. Some communities have collection sites for those sorts of things. We don't have that in my town, but every spring we have a big spring cleaning, and they set up a place where you can take old chemicals, paints, batteries, electronics, etc. Your sanitation department should be able to tell you either how to dispose of it, or where you can take it.
