We have one cat who stays on a prescription food. Most of our cats are elderly, too. I realized after buying name brand, but less expensive dry food, that my older cats threw up a lot. They did not do this with more expensive food such as Purina One and other more expensive brands.
Purina One is on sale a good bit in our area and you can often find coupons on coupon websites for it. So, if your cat is throwing up a lot, it may be from fillers in the dry or wet food. My cats will throw up with Nine Lives canned food, too, and not Friskies canned food. I give my cats one tsp. of canned food and I leave a bowl of dry food out, at all times, since overeating dry food has not been a problem.

Check the ingredients of the cat food you are feeding your cat. If the first ingredient isn't a named meat (chicken, beef, etc) then it is not good for your cat. I'd stay away from fish too. Grains (especially corn) are not good for your cat. Canned is way better than dry. Google EACH ingredient and add "cat food" to the search. You will be amazed what pet food companies get away with.

Never Purina. GM corn wheat and soy. Purina and almost all grocery store pet food even has euthanized pets cooked into formula. Corn is a big allergen. To feed Purina and similar is to invite allergies, cancers and sickness. Google euthanized pets in pet food. The poison to euthanize does not cook out. Even science diet usual first ingredient is corn. Vets sell for profits usually. Feed better. Homemade, raw is good, look up recipes for feeding pets. Convenient but costs a little more, is EVO, California Naturals. Pets eat a little less as they are more satisfied.
I have compared all dog food brands and I think that Costco's brand is the best. No, I do not work for Costco.
I have eight cats and, originally, they were avid about "healthful Life" by Purina, up 'til they were about three yrs. old. Then, did I have a problem - they refused to eat any dry cat food and I wasn't giving in to the wet food mess. So, I tried almost every brand I could find and ended up with IAMS! They love it and, while it is very expensive, their health is much more important to me. They are playful, very loving, and extremely healthy. I hope to never change this brand. It's been wonderful for my furry housemates!
Some cats when they reach a certain age their stomach just can take some of the fillers that are in their food and start to vomit. This is what happened to our cat. He had been fine on his brand of dry food and then just started vomiting almost very day. We changed his dry food several times with no change.
