I have a puppy pit bull. Is it true that they can lose their smell and not recognize you? How can I make him a friendly pit bull with pets and people?

Never heard that about losing smell, but I do know that the most important thing to help a dog be friendly is socialization. Introduce the dog to a variety of kind people and don't allow him to be mistreated by anyone. It's a theory that staying on a chain helps toward making dogs mean. Love is the most important thing you can give a dog (or anything else) to help them be friendly.
Socialization, exposure to people, lots of love and treat him as any other dog. Make sure that he is properly leash trained because when he grows to adult size, he'll be strong enough to drag and pull you wherever he wants to go.

Good obedience training and socialization are best! My brother has a 85lb solid muscle Pit Bull that is very scary looking but he's nothing but a huge baby. He listens well (which is easy for Pits) and he loves people. Glenn'sMom is great advice, love him and socialize him. Training doesn't hurt either. Pit Bulls are easy to train, they are eager to please and are pretty smart (even if they don't act like it).

Pit Bulls are no more apt to lose the sense of smell than most other breeds, they all are in the running for problems with sight, sound or smell in advanced age.
