Another solution, keep a white candle stub in your sewing kit. Pull the length of thread over it a few times before threading your needle. It stiffens and strengthens the thread, makes it easier to sew. Also, cut your threads a maximum of 18" long. Yes, you'll have to re-thread more often, but you will also avoid a lot of tangles.
