Uses for Christmas Lights

Don't pack away the lights. When you pack away your Christmas decorations, leave out a strand of clear lights. You can use these to brighten a room on some of the dull, gray winter days ahead. There are numerous ways to include these lights in your home decor.

Here are six suggestions for using left over Christmas lights to chase away the winter blahs.

  1. Save an empty wine or sparkling cider glass bottle. Wash and let it dry completely. Put a strand of lights (20 lights work well with most bottles) inside of the bottle. The lights reflect beautifully on the clear or colored glass bottle. You could also use some type of clear glass vase instead of a bottle.
  2. Place a strand of lights along a mantel or around an accent table to highlight a decorative display.
  3. Make a tabletop arrangement and include lights in the arrangement
  4. Add a strand of lights to an artificial ficus or evergreen tree.
  5. If you have a container of rosemary growing, add a strand of lights to it.
  6. Arrange various size glass containers on a mirror and wind the lights in between the containers. The result is a stunning, yet not overwhelming display of light.

I love your post.... It reminded me of a 30 something friend of my DIL who had her first apartment in an old timey house in the Houston heights. She took the luggage rack from the top of an old car and entwined those tiny white strands of lights through and around it. She hung it in her living room where a chandelier would go. It was a perfect match for her "first place furniture finds". It worked with the light switch that was by the front door.

Really good ideas to share! I used to have them on one of my silk ficas trees; now you have me thinking I should do it again ;-) I currently leave clear ones up around the large window and double sliders on my recessed patio year round because it's a wonderful touch when sitting out there on nice warm spring and summer evenings.

I have two more ideas!
1. I run strands of white lights under the railing on my back deck. Here in the Southeast the bugs flying around a porch light are terrible and no amount of swatting or "bug lights" or "bug zappers" will help. By leaving the white Christmas lights on (I have them on a timer) I don't have to turn the porch light on.

2. I also have a very dark front yard. And the same problem with bugs around the front porch light, too. So I drape white Christmas lights (again, on a timer) along the walkway and I used just a small dab to attach them to the sides of the steps up to the door. No more tripping and no more bug swatting!

What a nice idea. I agree with you about the dull days during the winter and this would certainly brighten up my living room.
Thank you kindly for your idea.

I suggested to a friend who was complaining about the lighting in a section of his toolshed to string white Christmas lights against the wall above the top shelf and under the four other shelves so he could see what was on them. It works great for him. My friend took the suggestion and uses them in her laundry room/powder room.

That way no one needs to turn on bright lights in the night.

Mostly for the Christmas season but I guess you could use it anytime, I have an old Quebec heater that I stuff with blinking coloured lights. The lights show through the grating as fire would. Looks great.

Your ideas are giving me ideas now. Thank you.

I take glass decorator containers and place them under sofa tables (mine are glass). I put clear Christmas lightes in them. When I am coming home late and don't want to come home to a dark house this is so nice. Romantic also in the bedroom.

I love the idea of coiling a strand of white lights into a colored bottle. I have a small collection of colored vases in different sizes and shapes, and the white lights sparkling through will look just beautiful.

Great tip!
