I've had luck with rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer (most are alcohol based) also works but can leave a residue.
The best thing I've found to remove permanent marker from just about anything that isn't porous, is nail polish remover!
Mr. Clean Eraser worked to remove permanent marker from the chrome trim on my t.v. stand.
