Peel onions; cut a thin slice from tops, and slash cut surfaces of onions with a shallow x. Place onions in a 12 x 8 x 2 inch baking dish. Combine sugar and remaining ingredients, stirring until sugar dissolves; pour over onions. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until tender.

I feel rather dense asking these questions, but here goes anyway:
How are these served? Hot? Cold? As a side dish? Like a pickled veggie? Do you cut them further down after baking?
