Does anyone know of a good source for free, vintage, red work designs? I am thinking of using them to make quilt squares. Thanks.

Ebay will have them.
While not exactly vintage, I used old coloring books and copied the pictures I wanted. They came out very charming. When copying you can re-size to the size you need. The designs are simple and you can find many themes among the coloring books.
This link can show you free patterns. Perhaps you can advertise on your local Freecycle.com or Craigslist.com for some. Good luck!

Have you tried looking on the embroidery pages at about.com? I've found several patterns for hand embroidery there, including some really nice redwork. I've also found some that can be adapted. This page is full of links to vintage embroidery-all free because they are 'public domain':
P.S. I found ThriftyFun on the Frugal Living forum message board back in 2005. :)
