I want to crush some sea shells. Has anyone ever done this? Aside from taking a hammer to them, there really is not a special way to do so. Is there?

Unless the shells are very thick, use a rolling pin to crush the shells. The pieces will be more uniform. If you put them in a plastic bag or between two towels, the dust and small pieces will not fly all over
I usually roll the shells in a tea towel or bath towel , find a length of builders wood about a 120 cm x 9 x 6 cms , put your feet on both ends of the towel, and then pound , like a vertical battering ram, seems to work well especially for the garden
