The rubber tips commonly put on kitchen chair and patio furniture legs do a great job of protecting the floor, until the tubular metal within cuts through the tips. You'll never have that problem again if you buy a small supply of flat washers just large enough to fit over the ends of the furniture legs before the tips are put on. Once in place, the washers absolutely prevent the sharp edge of the tubing from slicing through the rubber guards.

Boy, do I ever wish we'd done this when we inherited chairs and bought a new sheet of linoleum for our kitchen a few years ago! We didn't have the rubber tips, just tried taping on washers. Needless to say, the tape didn't hold and my new linoleum got shredded. Thank goodness, we were able to get better flooring! Better chairs, too, for that matter.
